There are a lot of options for keto snack foods. Their low to no carb ingredients are not going to screw up your ketogenic meal plan. Particularly when you need an on the go keto snack or some satisfying keto movie snacks.

- We can safely consume 20-30 grams of low glycemic carbohydrates a day and still maintain a ketogenic state.
- It’s crucial that you select only low glycemic or “slow” carbohydrates if the snack you choose is carb based.
- Quantity must be limited.
- The only two sugar substitutes I could find that do not elicit an insulin response are sucralose and stevia. Both are acceptable if the label states zero to 2 grams of carbs per serving.
- Learning to read and really understand food labels is the key to selecting safe keto snacks. If there is no label, I’ve listed an unbiased website that discloses nutritional information of just about every food imaginable.
Our List of the Best Keto Snack Ideas
We’ll look at potential foods keto snack ideas that are both non-sweet and semi-sweet. As well as some of the sugar substitutes. Since many of the sugar substitutes actually cause an insulin response, we have to discount those particular bad keto snack ideas.
I took some time and reviewed the ingredients of over 130 online keto snack recipes for approval. The whole list keto snack ideas are included with links for your convenience. Many are quick keto snacks, keto sweet snacks, keto savory snacks… well, you get the point. They’re all great keto snacks!
I would also like to cover why some of the food choices are keto and low carb friendly. I don’t know about you, but I was (and still am) the guy who always asks why. So, an explanation is in order.
The Best Keto Snacks
The best keto snacks recipes are those that low carb friendly or no-carb (less than 3 grams for the serving). But, regardless if you’re in a ketogenic state or not, the best keto snack ideas are ones you don’t overindulge on, period. Too much of anything will still cause weight gain.
The Best Quick and Easy Keto Snacks Ideas
Pepperoni
This is a great choice because the carbohydrate content is so low that it’s not worth counting and it’s also a quick and easy keto snacks finger food.
Cheese
Also, so low carb that it does not interfere with a keto meal plan. That said, I’ve had clients respond differently to cheese. My guess is it’s easy to over-consume calories with cheese. So be careful and test how you respond to this easy keto snack.
Cream Cheese
This low carb friendly snack is a great choice for keto snacking that can be added to your favorite fresh veggie. Perfect for quick and easy keto snacks.
Rolled Deli Ham
I’m not a fan of deli meat, but roll it, cut it and they make quick and easy keto snacks to enjoy.
Fried Ham
Again, I’m not a fan of deli meats, but fried ham makes a tasty keto friendly snack.
Annie’s Beef Hot Dogs
Cut them into finger servings for quick and easy keto snacks. A hair on the expensive side, but quality ingredients.
Dill Pickles (Not the Sweet Ones)
This might be one of my favorite quick and easy keto snacks. A medium-sized dill pickle is low carb friendly. Having only about 1 gram of carbs. That’s negligible for the amount someone will typically eat. Enjoy!
Beef Jerky
One that’s not made with sugar (typically home-made). Be careful with this one. Many of the more popular brands are high in sugar. My suggestion is to find the one lowest in sugar (carbs) and regulate the amount you eat. Otherwise, perfect for quick and easy keto snacks, and a great source of protein.
Celery
Despite its super-low caloric content, there are still some carbs that are sugar. But, the rest of the carbohydrates are fiber, most of which are insoluble. Making it a decent choice if you don’t eat a ton. Makes for quick and easy keto snacks.
Olives
The bottom line, this is a great choice. Super low carb, and a decent source of fat. They make easy and quick keto snacks, just open the jar and enjoy them.
Cucumbers
These go great with hummus, very low carb friendly, and refreshing. They make perfect quick and easy keto snacks.
Peppers
They are versatile, low carbohydrate, and pack a serious punch for nutritional value. Making them a perfect crunchy keto snack to pair with hummus and cream cheese.
Pork Rinds
Pretty much a zero carbohydrate food high in protein and fat. They can satisfy that urge for a crunch keto snack too. Especially great if you need a keto snack on the go. Check for some recipes below too.
Hard Boiled Eggs
I consider this more part of a meal than a snack, but it is easy to squeeze a couple in between meals. I’m a huge fan of whole eggs for all their nutritional value and really low prices. Not as quick as other options but still an easy snack. Just have to know how to boil water.
A Tbsp of Coconut Oil
I don’t really consider this a snack. But when I need a few extra calories and I feel like my fats are a little too low, I grab a Tbsp of coconut oil. I find it very tasty and quick. Great in coffee too.
A Tbsp of Kerry’s Irish Butter
Again, not really a snack, but ideal extra calories if fats are too low. Seriously tasty too! And also great in coffee.
Jones Pork Sausage
The fully cooked version can be heated in the microwave and makes a delightful snack and quick keto snack.
“Just Okay” Easy Keto Diet Snacks
Hummus
Typically, the ingredients are garbanzo beans (chickpeas), olive oil, and tahini. Why is it just an okay keto diet snacks choice? Two tablespoons have 4 grams of carbs. So if the rest of your day is really low in carbs, then it’s acceptable to eat a couple of servings with fresh veggies.
Guacamole
Typically, the ingredients are avocado, onions, peppers, herbs, and spices. Two tablespoons contain up to 3 grams of carbohydrates. So this falls into the same category of keto diet snacks as hummus. A couple of servings on fresh veggies or with your eggs is a great addition if the rest of your day is super low carb.
Really Dark Chocolate
You read that right, chocolate. But it has to be really dark. Must be 86% or higher for it to be included with these other keto diet snacks.
Avocado
A great source of fat, but on the high end of carbs for keto diet snack ideas. That said, I think they’re a great food to include if your overall carb intake is on the lower end (less than 20 grams).

It is a great way to find the unbiased nutritional makeup of foods. If the carbohydrate content is greater than 1-2 grams per serving, avoid large quantities.
What About Keto Snacks With Sugar Substitutes
This is a really valid question.
Let’s look at the sugar substitutes that will not interfere with a keto diet plan. I’m not going to discuss whether they are controversial to overall health. That could make up a very long article in itself.
But there is some compelling peer-reviewed research stating that many sugar substitutes may elicit additional carbohydrate cravings. Resulting in weight gain. Nonetheless, let’s look at their application to a keto diet.
The following three sugar substitutes are the only ones that I could find any research stating that they do not produce an insulin response:
- Sucralose: is technically noncaloric since we can’t break it down. There’s plenty of controversy around sucralose and I don’t find it to be very palatable. But that’s my preference.
- Stevia: is a sugar substitute extracted from a particular plant leaf. Like sucralose, it has a distinct flavor that is palatable to some, but not all.
- Erythritol: is a sugar alcohol that does not elicit an insulin response. Making erythritol a perfect Keto sugar substitute
If these sugar substitutes are listed on your food selection and it states zero to almost no carbohydrates, it’s an acceptable keto snack idea.
A Recap About Keto Diet Plans
Let’s do a quick review of how a keto diet works. You can learn a lot more about it from my article How to Get into Ketosis Fast and Staying There [Safely].
Health care professionals have a little different perspective on ketosis. They type they’re referring to typically occurs during a very dangerous stage of diabetes where one’s blood sugar is extremely elevated, but they are still producing ketone bodies. This is dangerous and is not the type of outcome for a keto diet we’re discussing.
Our body does not need carbohydrates to survive. We have some really cool systems that will make the glucose needed for our neural system and red blood cells. I’m referring to gluconeogenesis.
The rest of our cells can survive just fine on ketone bodies. They are acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone if you dig the nerdy component to metabolism.
It takes about two weeks of super-low carbohydrate consumption to reach the stage where we switch from ketone bodies as a predominant fuel source to more of our stored fatty acids at rest.
After about three weeks of super-low carbohydrate consumption, your blood concentration of ketone bodies continues to rise to a steady-state. These ketone bodies are then used via gluconeogenesis to fuel our neural tissue and red blood cells.
By maintaining this high level of ketone bodies, there’s a sparing effect on muscle tissue. This is a really good thing!
So, bottom line, we shift our metabolic system to burn ketone bodies and fatty acids, sparing muscle tissue, and perpetuating our survival.
So, I sincerely believe (from an educated perspective), have peer-reviewed proof and personal proof (see my blood work after 6 months of a keto diet) that a keto diet is safe and extremely effective.
And no doubt, having low carb keto-friendly snacks and keto sweet snacks helps a lot!
A recap of how we burn fat
How do we burn fat? Well, the breakdown of fat is called beta-oxidation. Stored fat is a rich source of energy because it undergoes more oxidation than carbohydrates to ultimately yield energy, CO2, and H2O.
Beta oxidation (oxidation of fatty acids) happens within the mitochondria of the cell. But, let’s simplify:
- First, we draw from blood lipids. That’s fat that is either recently absorbed or being transported by the blood.
- Next, we draw fat from intramuscular stores. Think of this as the marbling in a steak.
- Then while at rest, we replace the intramuscular fat with the subcutaneous fat we all want to shed.
We never lose the fat cells that store fat. Instead, they shrink. Here’s what’s most unsettling about this situation… We can produce an infinite amount of fat cells, but we can never lose them. Only shrink them. It’s like buying a ton of “collapsible luggage” that’s always ready for more storage.
So, the transfer of fat from the subcutaneous fat stores (what most people consider fat) to the intramuscular stores for use as energy is how the body loses fat. That’s a simplified version that I hope makes sense to you.

A Recap of Carbohydrate Metabolism
Remember, depending on your body size, fitness level, and gut microbe makeup (not that you’ll know that information), you can still consume close to 30 grams of carbohydrates and maintain a ketogenic state.
But before I do a brief recap of carbohydrate metabolism, allow me to preface the importance of only consuming low glycemic or “slow carbohydrates.” Selecting only slow or low glycemic carbohydrates minimizes our insulin response.
All of the listed keto-friendly and keto sweet snacks listed in this article are low glycemic.

Conclusion on Keto Snack Ideas
If you have taken the leap and switched to a full-blown keto diet meal plan and you’ve been on it for more than two weeks, you definitely know the benefits. It’s most certainly not an easy plan to follow particularly because our society is built around carbohydrates as a staple.
It definitely makes transporting your snacks or finding keto movie snacks difficult. But as you can see, there are a few selections available and thanks to the copious amount of blogs, more and more options are made available.
Cleary, we need to make ourselves label savvy and learn to decipher between super-low carbohydrates and low carbohydrates. We also have to be very skeptical of sugar substitutes claiming to make sweet keto snacks if they elicit an insulin response.
If you’re armed with the above information, you should be successful in maintaining a ketogenic state and continue to preserve muscle tissue while growing leaner (and feeling great).

Snacks when craving sugar?
Most of the sweet keto snacks above require some planning and preparation. But they will remedy the proverbial sweet tooth. Just be cautious about which artificial sweeteners are used. I covered that point in a section above.
